  • I had to make a run to Ottumwa today. I usually do about 70 mph down the bypass between Osky and Ottumwa. It's a 65 mph road so I don't mind doing 70. There is a town we have to go through at the moment that slows down to 35 mph. It's a one-cop town, but it seems that cop is always out looking for speeders. I only had to get caught speeding in that town once to know to slow my butt down (and my vehicle as well) when I'm inside his city limits.

While I'm driving through this little one-cop town, a state trooper falls in line behind me. I'm thinking, "Oh great, watch yourself, Debbie," as this trooper follows me. I usually start speeding in the construction zone leaving the one-cop town and knew that I'd better not with one following me.

As we get into the 55 mph zone at the end of the construction area, the trooper starts to pass me. I'm doing 55, so he's going faster, but I'm happy to let him go around so I can see which way he's heading into Ottumwa. Will he follow the bypass in the whole way, or is he going to take the shortcut I usually take. Whichever direction he goes, I'm planning on going the opposite way, but I'm hoping he doesn't take the shortcut.

Now the shortcut is a 55 mph zone, but everyone does 60-65 on this section of road. I was relieved to see the trooper continue on the bypass, allowing me to take the shortcut. Other people must have felt the same way because practically everyone behind me turned off, too. We had a little convoy of 4 or 5 cars, a van and a semi truck all tooling down the road doing 65 in a 55 mph zone, with me in the lead. I come around one of the curves a few miles in and lo and behold, there's another state trooper.

Immediately I take my foot off the gas, knowing not to step on the brakes as that will only signal him that I knew I was speeding. I slow down to the speed limit for just a bit, watching my rear-view mirror, relieved after a few miles to see he's not turning around and coming after me. Whew!!!

That was my close call for the day, and I just thank the Lord I didn't have to go home with a ticket in hand and have to listen to my husband lecture me for speeding.

John denies he speeds because he never gets caught for it. When I tell him he's a liar and I see him doing 70-something in a 65 from time to time, he just says, "Prove it." Since I cannot prove it, and he's never had a speeding ticket, he thinks he's has the right to rag me when I get caught for speeding (which is very, very seldom).

You can bet your boots that I will be driving the speed limit home tonight. Too many state troopers patrolling my normal way home, and I'd hate to give my husband more ammunition to tease me with.

  • Hi, I linked from ur comment in my xanga. thought I would stop by and say hi to you as well. Gotta love those cops huh? lol Have a good day! Erin

  • I've been caught once, I was running 80 behind a young lady who periodically slowed to 65, I went to 85 to overtake her about six times before I realised she was slowing down at the places she knew there were speed camera's . There'no fool like an old fool, too damned late I stayed within the 70 limit. That cost me £60 and four points on my licence

  • I am one of the 27 people remaining in North America who still follow the posted speed limit....

  • i don't even wanna tell ya the last time i had a speeding ticket cuz then i'd be sure to get one tonight on the way home (but, it's been a looooong time!)

  • I've got myself a lead foot, too! Knock on wood- I've only been ticketed once- 80 in a 60... I can talk my way out of a city ticket but those State Highway Patrolmen are rough!!

  • Uh, my kids are the ones writing the tickets and I sure don't want one of their peers giving me one, so I keep an eye on the speedometer!

  • i have been pulled over five different times, in five different states and all but once for speeding. i have a lead foot and i need to work on that...
